Last updated September 2026. We compare magnesium creams on price, size, magnesium form and added actives, using each brand's own published product information. Mama Bear Oasis makes one of the creams listed below — we have included it alongside the others and been explicit about where it costs more.
Quick answer: the best magnesium cream depends on what you want it to do
There is no single best magnesium cream. The honest answer is that three different shoppers will make three different correct choices:
| If you want… | Consider | Price |
|---|---|---|
| The lowest price from a mainstream brand | BetterYou Magnesium Body Lotion | $14.95 |
| The most established name in topical magnesium | Ancient Minerals Magnesium Lotion | $22.95 |
| A lavender-forward cream built around a bedtime ritual | Mama Bear Oasis Magnesium Lavender Cream | $35.00 |

| BetterYou Magnesium Sleep Lotion | $14.95 | 180 ml | Chamomile, lavender | Sleep, lowest cost |

| Mama Bear Oasis Magnesium Lavender Cream | $35.00 | 60+ applications | Magnesium, lavender | A nightly wind-down ritual |
Prices and sizes above are taken from each brand's own website in September 2026 and change over time. Where a brand does not publish a size, we have said so rather than guessing.
BetterYou — the cheapest way to try topical magnesium
If you have never used a magnesium cream and you do not yet know whether you will like the texture or the routine, BetterYou is the most sensible place to start. At $14.95 it is the least expensive option here, and the Sleep Lotion version adds chamomile and lavender for night-time use at the same price.
The trade-off is that it is a lotion rather than a rich cream. Lotions absorb faster but leave less on the skin. If you want something that feels substantial when you massage it into your shoulders, this is not that product.
Ancient Minerals — the established name
Ancient Minerals has been selling topical magnesium longer than most brands in this category, and their range is the broadest: a standard Magnesium Lotion at $22.95, a Goodnight formula at $29.95, and an Ultra + MSM version at $24.95 aimed at muscle recovery.
If you want the option most likely to be recognised and reviewed elsewhere, this is it. Note that the brand does not publish container sizes on its collection page, which makes a true price-per-ounce comparison difficult.
Mama Bear Oasis — built for the ten minutes before bed
Full disclosure: this is our product, and it is the most expensive cream in this comparison at $35.
We are not going to argue it is cheaper, because it is not. What it is built for is different. It is a lavender-forward cream designed around a specific moment — the few minutes after the house goes quiet, massaged into shoulders and neck as a signal to your body that the day is over. The scent is a deliberate part of that, not an afterthought.
On cost per use, one jar covers 60+ applications, which works out at under $0.60 a night. Whether that is worth $20 more than a BetterYou lotion depends entirely on whether the ritual matters to you, or whether you simply want magnesium on your skin.
If you only want the cheapest magnesium, buy the BetterYou. If you want the thing you look forward to at 10pm, that is what we made.
What actually matters when choosing
The form of magnesium
Most topical products use magnesium chloride, which dissolves readily and is the form used in magnesium oil. Magnesium sulfate — Epsom salt — is cheaper and common in bath products but is generally considered less suited to leave-on creams. Several brands, including both BetterYou and Ancient Minerals, do not state the form on their collection pages, so check the individual product label.
Whether it stings
Topical magnesium can tingle or itch on first use, particularly on freshly shaved skin or if you are low in magnesium. This usually fades over a week or two of regular use. Creams tend to sting less than sprays because the magnesium is buffered in an emollient base. We cover this in detail in what are the side effects of magnesium cream.
Added actives
Lavender and chamomile are included for scent and relaxation rather than for magnesium delivery. MSM and menthol are aimed at muscle discomfort. Melatonin appears in some sleep lotions — if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, that is the ingredient to check for, and to raise with your doctor.
Price per use, not price per jar
A $15 lotion you use twice and abandon costs more than a $35 jar you use nightly for two months. Work out roughly how many applications you get, not just what it costs at the till.
How to use magnesium cream so it actually does something
The most common mistake is applying too little, too rarely, and concluding within three nights that it does not work. Magnesium cream is a routine, not a switch.
Apply to areas with thinner skin and good circulation — the neck, shoulders, inner forearms, behind the knees and the tops of the feet. Massage until absorbed rather than patting it on. Use it at roughly the same time each evening, ideally 20–30 minutes before bed, so the scent and the routine have time to register.
For the full timing and frequency breakdown, see how often and when to apply magnesium cream.
Does magnesium cream work at all?
This is a fair question and the evidence is genuinely mixed. Transdermal magnesium absorption is less well established than oral supplementation, and some of the strongest claims made in this category outrun the research. What is better supported is the relaxation effect of the routine itself and of lavender aromatherapy.
We have written an honest look at the evidence in does magnesium cream actually work, including what the studies do and do not show. If you want to compare topical against oral forms, see which type of magnesium is best for sleep.

Frequently asked questions
Which magnesium cream is best for sleep?
For lowest cost, BetterYou Magnesium Sleep Lotion at $14.95 adds chamomile and lavender. For a richer cream built around an evening routine, our Magnesium Lavender Cream is $35. Both are used the same way: applied to neck and shoulders 20–30 minutes before bed.
How long before I notice anything?
Most people who notice a difference report it building over the first five to seven nights rather than on night one. If nothing has changed after three weeks of consistent nightly use, it is probably not for you.
Can I use magnesium cream every night?
Yes. Nightly use is the intended pattern for all the products here. Start with a small amount to check how your skin reacts.
Is magnesium cream safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Check the specific formula and speak to your doctor. The ingredient that most often needs checking is melatonin, which appears in some sleep lotions. Our Magnesium Lavender Cream contains no melatonin; our Sleep Roll-On does.
Does magnesium cream expire?
Check the period-after-opening symbol on the jar. Most fall between 6 and 12 months once opened.
The short version
Buy BetterYou if you want to spend the least. Buy Ancient Minerals if you want the most established name. Buy ours if the ten minutes before bed are the point, and the lavender and the ritual are worth $20 more to you than they are to someone else.
All three will put magnesium on your skin. They are not trying to do the same thing with it.
